Joseph
Kim had a vision of establishing a TCM school that would
provide a quality academic program at an affordable tuition
to serve the underserved community of Downey. He drew
upon experience practitioner, Dr. Sunny Sungil Kim, owner
of “Holy Acupuncture and Herbs”. HAH is a
clinic established in Downey, California in July of 1998.
Through HAH, Golden State University was able to draw
from Dr. Sunny Kim’s leadership, professional network,
professional experience and HAH’s presence n the
Downey community. In the spirit of service to the community,
Dr. Sungil Kim organized Golden State University as an
Oriental Medicine School that focused on physical and
spiritual healing to carry out the vision of Mr. Joseph
Kim.
Golden
State University submitted its Application to Operate
to the State of California, Bureau for Private, Postsecondary
and Vocational Education (BPPVE) in December 2004. Golden
State University received its initial approval to grant
degrees under the provisions of the California Education
Code, Section 94900 in April 2006.
Golden
State University enrolled its first student on July 2006.
Its inaugural class in the summer of 2006 consisted of
4 students with an eager passion to learn asian medicine.
Golden State University continued to grow slowly, enrolling
additional 4 or 5 students per quarter. This slow growth
allowed GSU to continue to offer an intimate learning
environment, while keeping tuition costs down.
